Mardi Gras Influence
King Cakes can be bought at grocery stores or made at home. The traditional food dates back to the Middle Ages, and consists of Danish pastry, icing, and cinnamon*. The cakes are generally covered in the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for power. Inside the cake you’ll find cream cheese and even a plastic baby. Yes, a plastic baby. The person who eats the piece of pastry containing the toy is said to have good luck and gets various privileges throughout the Mardi Gras celebration.
