Calling all history buffs! Did you know that Columbia, South Carolina, is home to the largest museum in the Southeastern United States? After you’re done playing a round of golf at Columbia’s Oak Hill Golf Club and checking out Ben Hastings’ Liberty National Agency, you can explore one of the many exhibits at the South Carolina State Museum!
Liberty National – Travel Back in Time in Columbia
Founded in 1988, the museum’s collection contains more than 70,000 artifacts and represents four disciplines: art, cultural history, science and technology, and natural history*. Some of the more notable exhibits include: life-size replicas of a steam-powered railroad locomotive called the Best Friend of Charleston, the first American-built locomotive, and the H.L. Hunley, which was the first submarine to sink an enemy ship in combat**. Each year, the Columbia-based museum hosts an average of eight to ten changing exhibitions so there’s always something new to see.
