Years ago, we were taught a working definition of management by Steve Brown of The Fortune Group. Brown said, “Management is the skill of attaining predetermined objectives with and through the voluntary cooperation and effort of other people.”
It’s good for me to know management is a skill that can be learned rather than something you must have at birth. Since it is learned, it must be taught. Because quality management achieves goals, effective managers get results — results that are pre-determined and achieved through those we train. It is their effort and their passion that determines their results and their success.
I am proud to work for an organization that, for more than 100 years, has given so many people the opportunity to have a great career in the insurance business. Some were successful as personal producers. Some were able to grow from producers into successful Managers and accomplish great things working for the customer and the Company.
Now, we begin the next 100+ years with a new attitude and a new group of leaders. The ‘employee’ attitude has been replaced by the ‘business owner’ attitude as the next generation joins Liberty National. This group has the ‘Opportunity of a Lifetime’ to build their own business and wealth.
Never before has there been such a great time for people to join our Company and open their business. Producers will continue to produce as they help people with our products. Managers will manage as they stand beside producers to inform, inspire, instruct, and, as Stephen Covey said, “keep the blades sharpened.” Leaders will be positioned to see further and more clearly and provide the direction to success. We need leaders here at Liberty National.
